3-Minute Floating Challenge
IFSTA 3-Minute Floating Challenge 2027
Save the date: 10–16 May 2027
Following the success of its first edition, the 3-Minute Floating Challenge returns in 2027.
From Monday 10 to Sunday 16 May 2027, during International Learn to Swim Week, we will once again challenge everyone to stay afloat independently for at least three minutes.
What began in 2026 as a simple but powerful Dutch challenge quickly grew into an international water safety initiative. More than 1,200 people took part in the Netherlands. Children and adults in Vietnam, Malaysia, Uganda and India also took on the challenge. Organisations in several other countries have already expressed interest in supporting and running the challenge in 2027.
The IFSTA 3-Minute Floating Challenge 2027 promises to be a special international event.
One simple skill can save lives
Falling into water unexpectedly can cause panic. The first instinct is often to swim as quickly as possible. This uses a great deal of energy and can lead to exhaustion.
A person who stays calm and floats first can:
-
regain control of their breathing;
-
conserve valuable energy;
-
assess their surroundings;
-
buy time until help arrives.
The challenge is therefore not about speed or perfect technique. It is about calm, control, confidence and the ability to stay safely at the surface for a period of time.
The message is simple:
De boodschap is eenvoudig:
Floating buys time. And time can save lives.
From a successful challenge to an international movement
The strength of the 3-Minute Floating Challenge lies in its simplicity. It requires no complicated rules or extensive preparation. Swimming organisations can run the challenge during a regular lesson, at a dedicated water safety event or as a shared activity with learners, parents and others.
The first edition showed that this message crosses languages, cultures and borders. Swimming teachers, swimming organisations and participants around the world understand the importance of being able to stay afloat calmly and with control.
In 2027, we want this movement to grow. Together with swim schools, swimming pools, swimming clubs, swimming teachers and international partners, we want many more people to experience why the ability to float matters.
How can your swimming organisation take part?
During the week of 10–16 May 2027, each participating swimming organisation can choose a suitable time to run the challenge. We recommend using the final 10 minutes of a swimming lesson.
Make it a memorable part of a lesson, organise a special challenge or invite parents, family members and other interested people to join in.
By taking part, you will:
-
raise awareness of water safety;
-
help participants experience how to remain calm in the water;
-
give a potentially lifesaving skill the attention it deserves;
-
become part of a growing international water safety initiative.
Everyone who completes the challenge can be proud of an important achievement: staying afloat independently for three minutes and showing how calm and control can make a difference in the water.
